Heidelberg Theological Seminary (HTS) is pleased to announce Reverend Maynard Koerner as the seminary’s first full time professor. Rev. Koerner began to serve the seminary as the Professor of Ministry on a part time basis in the fall of 2004. He comes well qualified to assume this responsibility since he holds a BA in History from Dordt College in Sioux Center IA, a M. Div from Reformed Theological Seminary of Jackson, MS and is currently completing his thesis for the Doctor of Ministry degree program at New Geneva Seminary locatedat Colorado Springs, CO. Among the array of pastoral experiences, he has served a number of pastorates of the RCUS including Shafter, CA; Sutton, NE; Watertown, SD; Pueblo & Calhan, CO; and recently served as the pastor of St. John's Reformed Church of Lincol, NE. Rev. Koerner served on the Board of Trustees of New Geneva Seminary located in Colorado Springs, CO; Dordt College, Sioux Center, IA and the Sutton Christian School in Sutton, NE. Supplementally, He has been affiliated with NAPARC.
Rev. Koerners’s election to this new position is a product of the HTS Board’s late 2008 review of initiatives to enhance the role and value of the seminary in preparing men for the ministry.
Initiatives outlined in the HTS Board’s strategy review included: a. Recruit an on-site, full time professor/administrator. b. Broaden involvement of additional experienced RCUS pastors within the M. Div. program. c. Introduce a continuing “Training in Ministry” curriculum. d. Relocate seminary to a metropolitan area.
The HTS Board appointed Maynard Koerner as a full time Professor/administrator. His role will include teaching, recruiting, coordinating curriculum, scheduling of classes and facility use in serving the needs of the students. For purposes of broadening exposure of RCUS pastors to seminary students, the Board recommended an addition of adjunct professors for provision of concentrated instruction in 3-week block periods. Adjunct professors added as part of the HTS faculty include: Rev. Hank Bowen, Anderson, CA; Rev. George Syms, Mitchell, SD; Rev. Paul Treick, Modesto, CA; and Rev. Vern Pollema, Shafter, CA. These professors will complement the existing faculty of Dr. Warren Embree, Lincoln, NE; Dr. Robert Grossmann, Vermillion, SD; and Rev. Maynard Koerner, Sioux Falls, SD.
A primary mission of HTS, aside of training men to become pastors, is its desire to serve the church at the local level, RCUS Classis levels and the Synod of the RCUS. The Seminary wants to make its resources useful to the church. Therefore, HTS is initiating a curriculum for continued “Training in Ministry”. The three-fold purpose for this curriculum includes:
a. Provision of an introduction to the RCUS for men who have been trained at other seminaries or have been serving in other denominations. This series involves reading assignments and three separate weeks of concentrated classroom work. b. Provision of an opportunity for men in the RCUS ministry to take refresher courses. c. Provision of some ministerial studies to a broader audience. Additionally, the seminary will continue to sponsor two-day conferences as it has done for several years and provide pulpit supply when available. If there is interest in assisting in sponsoring a conference or there is need for pulpit supply, contact Rev. Maynard Koerner (phone:xxx-xxx-xxxx/ email: maykoerner@gmail.com) or Ray Schnabel (Phone: 309-657-1384/email: schnarh@gmail.com).
With Trinity Reformed Church’s (TRC) expansion plans for an addition of an education wing to its facility located in Sioux Falls, SD; the consistory of Trinity Reformed Church was approached for determination of its interest in the seminary co-locating with the church. Agreement between the congregation of TRC and the HTS Board was finalized in early May. With completion of the expansion in 2010, the seminary will initiate its relocation to Sioux Falls, SD for the fall semester in Sept 2010.
We appreciate the faithful prayer and funding support of many of you within the denomination and ask for your continued support as the seminary extends its outreach through training of men for the ministry. We especially appeal for your support and invite you to join us in the effort of identifying men who may be interested in seminary training. Names of any prospects you identify can be directed to Rev. Koerner, Ray Schnabel or any of the professors of HTS.
President Heidelberg Theological Seminary Mr. Ted Griess
